Microplastics Again—Are Increasing Research Reports Sounding a True Alarm for Humanity?

In recent days, a study published in the British chemical journal Polymer about the discovery of microplastics in human breast milk has sparked heated discussion online. This follows a report earlier this March, when Dutch scientists announced the discovery of microplastics in human blood. These findings are continuously reshaping our understanding of “microplastics” and are indeed sounding an alarm for humanity.

Until recently, the impact of microplastic particles on human health remained largely unknown. But the publication of these studies shows that microplastics are not as inert as previously assumed. Instead, they may trigger localized or systemic reactions in the human body.

As early as 2021, a research team from Nanjing University published a study in Environmental Science & Technology, revealing that participants who frequently drank bottled water, consumed takeaway food, or worked in dust-exposed environments had higher levels of microplastics in their feces. Moreover, an increase in microplastic content in the body may aggravate intestinal inflammation.

In addition, Professor Xia Yankai’s team from Nanjing Medical University, together with Professor Luo Yongming’s team from the Nanjing Institute of Soil Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences, were the first to discover a significant number and variety of microplastics and dye particles in human thrombus samples.
