Choosing the Right Tableware: What Problems Can Arise?

Food safety has always been a major concern. Beyond the safety of the food itself, it is equally important to pay attention to the tableware we use daily. Previous reports on food safety have indicated that improper use of certain tableware products can lead to the migration of harmful substances, potentially causing unseen food safety issues. So how should we correctly choose tableware? Here are some tips for selecting common tableware items.

Paper Cups
Paper cups are commonly used at home or in public spaces due to their low cost and convenience for guests. When purchasing and using paper cups, aside from concerns about fluorescent brighteners, cup hardness, and leakage, consumers should also pay attention to the following:

  1. Check whether the packaging has a QS certification mark, as paper cups are regulated products. If the mark is missing, do not purchase.
  2. Inspect the packaging for completeness, print clarity, and cleanliness of the cup’s inner and outer surfaces. High-quality cups should not be too soft, easily deformed, or have an unpleasant odor.
  3. Verify detailed product information on the packaging, such as brand, production date, and shelf life.
  4. If available, a small UV flashlight can be used to inspect the drinking surface; obvious blue fluorescence indicates caution is needed.
  5. Storage: Since paper cups are made of paper, store them in a ventilated, dry place after opening, and use them as soon as possible to avoid moisture.

Paper Straws
Most paper straws on the market are traditional multi-layered rolled straws, made from wood pulp or other plant fibers, glued together, dried, and cut into disposable straws. When purchasing and using paper straws, besides considering appearance and usability, pay attention to the following:

  1. Choose products from reputable manufacturers and check that labels and packaging are complete. Some small straw factories may use unsafe raw materials.
  2. Prefer natural-colored, odorless products to minimize risks of glue residues, dyes, inks, heavy metals, or chemical migration into food.
  3. Opt for individually sealed packaging to prevent microbial contamination during transport and storage.

Beyond traditional paper straws, Gaoyi has introduced a new generation of naturally degradable paper straws. Made with little or no glue and a single-layer overlap, these straws reduce potential hazards during production. They are also heat- and soak-resistant, remaining intact after 4 hours of immersion, without affecting usability. Interested consumers can give them a try.

Bamboo and Wooden Chopsticks
Commonly used in restaurants and fast-food venues, and sometimes at home. When purchasing, select products from reputable manufacturers, ensuring that all product information is complete. Pay attention to appearance: choose chopsticks of suitable length, straight, and free of bends. Smell is also important: avoid chopsticks with sulfur or paint odors. It is recommended to buy natural, unpainted bamboo or wooden chopsticks.

During use, ensure proper cleaning and scientific storage to prevent dampness and mold growth.
