Australia Announces Ban on Biodegradable Plastic Products Next Year

According to foreign media on November 16, the New South Wales Government in Australia passed the 2021 Plastics Reduction and Circular Economy Act, fulfilling the government’s commitment to ban certain problematic plastics, such as single-use plastics, and addressing plastic waste issues. Notably, the law also includes a ban on biodegradable and compostable plastics, raising questions about what this means for the industry.

The official website of the New South Wales Government states that under the new plastics reduction law, lightweight plastic bags will be banned starting June 1, 2022, and single-use plastic straws, stirrers, and cutlery will be prohibited starting November 1, 2022. The legislation specifically mentions that products made from biodegradable, compostable, or bioplastics, including those certified as compostable in Australia, will also be banned.

For the straw industry, this raises concerns about the future of the currently popular PLA biodegradable straws. However, it may be too early to say that PLA straws have no future.

With stricter plastic bans in various countries, plastic straws have already exited the market, and PLA and paper straws have become mainstream alternatives, widely used to combat “white pollution.” After six months of market observation, however, paper straws received heavy criticism for poor user experience, while merchants complained that PLA straws are very expensive.

Environmentally speaking, PLA straws are still relatively eco-friendly, as they can degrade under certain conditions. Although Australia’s new law mentions biodegradable materials without explicitly referencing PLA, it is not necessarily a good or bad signal. The straw industry still needs solutions that are both environmentally responsible and consumer-friendly.

Current complaints about PLA and paper straws mainly focus on experience, environmental impact, and cost, and balancing these three aspects is the key to the industry’s future. Gaoyi New Materials’ new generation of paper straws aims to strike this balance.

Insiders reveal that Gaoyi’s straws are uniquely designed with a single-layer paper structure, restoring the smooth feel of plastic straws while retaining the natural touch of paper. Leveraging industry-leading technology, the new straws are glue-free, odorless, and safe, which is excellent news for consumers.

In terms of environmental impact, unlike traditional multi-layer paper straws that are thick and heavy, Gaoyi straws are lightweight and flexible, making them easier to recycle. Food-grade paper rolls can be pulped and reused as recycled paper. For merchants, Gaoyi straws’ materials and design also provide a profit advantage.

Promoting green production and achieving low-carbon development” has become Gaoyi Straw’s mission. As the company’s leadership states, their products return to natural simplicity, guiding consumers to enjoy eco-friendly and safe experiences, and promoting the development of paper straws is a path Gaoyi is committed to pursuing.
